S
upport Steel Structure (3003) was a 25-day connection design and shop detailing project for an industrial client, delivered based on client-supplied structural inputs. The objective was to develop accurate structural steel connection designs and fabrication-ready shop drawings, maintaining consistency with client inputs, structural requirements, steel detailing standards, and project quality requirements
Project Scope: Approximately 110 structural steel connections, covering bolted and welded connections across the primary frame, plus detailing of grating, handrails, and ladders as per the 3D model.
Deliverables: Connection Design Calculation Report and Support Structure Shop Detail Drawings, including general arrangement, shop detail, and fabrication-ready drawings.
Tools & Software Used: STAAD.Pro, RAM Connection (structural/connection design); Advance Steel 2025 (3D structural modeling and shop detailing); AutoCAD (2D drafting/documentation).
Client Inputs: Initial 3D structural model, Support Structure GAD, and member end reaction forces.
Scope of Work: Design and verification of connections; preparation of the connection calculation report; preparation of shop detail drawings; detailing of grating, handrails, and ladders; and review and incorporation of applicable client requirements and comments.

Challenges
Managing a large volume of structural steel connections for an industrial client within a 25-day delivery window, while keeping connection design, modelling, and fabrication drawings fully aligned, presented several challenges:
Managing a large number of structural connections while maintaining consistent design criteria.
Ensuring connection design was based accurately on the member end reactions supplied by the client.
Maintaining consistency between connection calculations, the 3D structural model, and shop drawings.
Coordinating grating, handrail, and ladder arrangements with the primary steel structure.
Maintaining drawing accuracy and completeness across multiple fabrication deliverables within a tight project timeline.

Approach
A structured technical approach was followed across connection design, detailing, and quality control:
Input Review: Reviewed the client's 3D model, GAD, and member end reaction forces.
Connection Design: Developed and verified structural steel connections using STAAD.Pro and RAM Connection.
3D Detailing: Incorporated approved connection arrangements into Advance Steel 2025.
Shop Drawings: Prepared fabrication drawings, including grating, handrail, and ladder details.
QA/QC: Performed design, model, and drawing consistency checks before delivery, covering: client input and revision verification; member size and orientation verification; connection geometry and arrangement verification; bolt and weld arrangement verification; calculation-to-model consistency; model-to-drawing consistency; grating, handrail, and ladder arrangement checks; BOM and drawing information verification; and drawing completeness and revision control.
